The premise of Eli Pariser’s speech at TED really made me think. While I do not think Facebook or Google are trying anything other trying to improve the user’s experience and provide relevant information to the user, Eli shows the limitation of the current filtering.
While we want personalized data, we do not want only data that may seem relevant to us given our past behavior. This would serve as a segregating entity that could eventually promote all the fears that segregation creates.
After-all, if we are only in contact with or get information from like minds we do not expand our horizon are lend our mind the room to think or experience through the eyes of others. Eli’s observance is more important than most would believe.
